How to Apply Mascara
If only applying mascara were as straightforward as it seems, life would be so much easier. Just open the tube, swipe it on, and go about your day. Unfortunately, mascara application is a bit more complex, especially given how messy it can get around the delicate lash line. But since stepping out with lackluster lashes is not an option, investing a little extra time and patience is worth it. Luckily, we’ve compiled a comprehensive guide – Mascara Application 101 – to help you achieve flawless lashes. And don’t miss the special section on coating your lower lashes, a topic rarely discussed.
Your Essential Tools:
- Lash Combs: These are essential, especially if you have long lashes that need separating. The Seki Edge SS-603 Folding Lash Pin Comb is excellent for prepping your lashes.
- Lash Primer: Whoever said you don’t need a lash primer probably didn’t care much for dramatic lashes. Ignore that advice and use the Smashbox Photo Finish Lash Primer to enhance your lash look.
- Eyelash Curler: If you’re afraid of eyelash curlers, it’s time to get over it. Nothing opens up your eyes like a quick, 10-second curl. We love the Toniq Beauty Lashes For Days Eyelash Curler, not just for its rose gold color.
- Mascara Wand: Choose the wand that suits your needs. For volume, try the L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara. For length, the Chambor Infinite Lash Lengthening Mascara Black is ideal. For a faux curl effect, go for the Maybelline New York Volum Express Hyper Curl Mascara.
- Q-tips: Let’s be real, you might make a mess. But what’s the fun in perfect lashes without a few smudges? Keep a Q-tip handy for any mishaps, especially if you sneeze during application.
How to Apply Mascara:
1. Curl Your Lashes
Use an eyelash curler to lift and lengthen your lashes. Start at the root, press together, and hold for 10 seconds. You'll see a noticeable difference.
2. Apply Lash Primer
For better staying power, apply two coats of lash primer to both your top and bottom lashes. Wait a minute before moving on.
3. Properly Open Your Mascara
Twist the wand out of the tube and wipe off excess product on the edge. Avoid pumping the wand in and out, as this dries out the mascara.
4. Top Lashes First
Start with your top lashes. For high-impact lashes, coat them on both sides. Close your eye and apply mascara over the top of your lashes first.
5. Blink Technique
Instead of brushing the wand up and over your lashes, hold the wand still at the lash line and blink through the bristles. This helps your lashes pick up more product and achieve a fuller look.
6. Lower Lashes
Use the tip of the wand to apply mascara to the roots of your lower lashes. For the outer and inner corners, angle the wand vertically to coat each lash. Opt for a waterproof formula to avoid smudging.
7. Second Coat
For extra volume, apply a second coat. Once the first coat is dry, brush a little translucent powder on your lashes before applying the second coat. Using a different mascara formula for the second coat can enhance the effect.
